Hi, I just took a 500 miles round trip with my 3 children from Florida to Georgia. We found that the chargers are 100 miles apart so that was great. I used the enery consumption graph to determine my range since it’s more accurate. I also calculate about 30% additional energy consumption for going 80 mph. 290wh/mile. I made it home with only 5% charge remaining. The car was still going at 75mph before I got off the highway. Overall it was a great experience. Happy new year!

Great feedback. Happy New Year.

Do you try and keep the battery between 20-80%?

Moshe, I understand you can also conserve power by using the seat heaters rather than the normal system. Something to consider on your next trip. Thanks for the detailed report.

Could you compare and contrast this M3 trip with previous trips in your Volt? In particular I'm interested to know the cost of gas in the Volt vs. the cost of electricity (if you had to pay for it) in the M3. With a PHEV like the Volt I'm guessing that you probably use gas for the long hauls then electricity for the shorter trips at your destination. Would you consider using the Volt instead of the M3 on your next Florida trip?

I have a volt and I drive it every year from canada to south florida last time it cost me around 130$ for gas one way average of 47 mpg Love the car

I will make a video about this topic in the next few days. Also, I will not take the Volt to Florida. Stay tuned.

Hi Moshe. You may want to blur your exact home address from the map video. There's a lot of crazy people on the internet. Thanks for sharing your trip experience, very well done.

You have shown that EV's will always be a huge compromise when doing long distance trips. Your family is being way more accommodating than most and you can forget about changing over to EV the average ICE family with this video. However, EVs are still great for the great majority (>80%) of miles driven locally but I'll just plan on renting, borrowing, flying, or using my wife's car - on our next cross country trip.....

Ian Quist - good stuff! Need stories like yours getting out. How much range do you need in an EV? This demonstrates that 200-250 miles is a good number. A Florida trip from northern climes in a non Tesla is still doable, but not as easy as you experienced. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing. I agree with you 100%

Just drove our Model S from north of Toronto to Miami and back. We have done the trip 5 or 6 times, first time in an EV. I would NEVER drive an ICE on that trip again. It took us about 3 more hours than when we took our ICE. 4 of the hours of charging where lunch and dinner breaks (which we did in our ICE obviously). The extra few hours where not a problem for either of my kids or my wife. We have lifetime free supercharging, so the cost for the round trip was $3...parking garage fee at Miami SC. We personally, didn't feel that there was any compromise at all. I look forward to my next long road trip in my EV!

Greg Collins - did you see the charging speed? Over 400 miles per hour! Stop every 2 hours or so for a charge (20 minutes adds 130 miles) and a 20 minute stretch, coffee, or whatever. At this rate, you’re not losing much time to a gas powered car, since you’d likely stop anyway. His only obstacle was the box on the roof, which threw the efficiency/range calculations way off, but he learned from this and recovered on the return trip.

It wasn’t so bad Greg. We are a part of a revolution

The wipers are a problem. How do you turn off the wipers? I turn them off by putting them in auto. Only 123 auto? Auto is useless.

Touch the wiper icon once and they will turn off completely

Did you use the energy app? Why not show it in the video? It's a great tool for long trips. Also, had you not brought a spare tire and jack in the trunk, would you have been able to avoid the Thule box on the roof?

I saw so many drivers stuck on the road with flat tires. I was not going to be one of them.

A great "real trip video" many thanks. I went from Toronto to Myrtle Beach and back recently and also erred on the caution side for recharging as it was my first long trip. I also noticed in construction areas it did not recognize speed changes. Other than that no issues and a comfortable pleasant drive. Thanks again for an excellent "real" trip video. I know they are not the authors, you are,so some slack to them, but if your sons are going to give a view, and good for them, but ask them to stop eating and talking. Again though from instructive video, excellent.

Do you happen to know how much time was added to the overall trip for charging?

I planned my big time charging around the 3 meals. This way, there was not much time wasted.

The Electric Israeli - and how much of that time was spent doing other things, such as eating lunch, so it wasn’t time totally wasted?

2-3 hours each way.

This was a great series of videos demonstrating the practical use of a Model 3 on a long trip. I drive a truck between Lakeland, FL and Valdosta, GA almost everyday. All week I was looking for your black Model 3 with a roof rack. Unfortunately, It was not to be. Did you meet many viewers on your trip?

Thanks. Yes, I did at many SC. Fun times.
